AB OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the emerging trends of HIV infection in
Calcutta. METHODS: Cases: Samples from peoples having risk factors,
blood donors both professional and voluntary as a part of sentinel
surveillance. Sampling: Community based random sampling method were
followed to investigate Calcutta prostitute and Vis-a-Vis random samples
were collected from antenatal clinic and various O.P.D. clinics of city
hospitals having no apparent risk factors for HIV transmission. The test
serum were subjected for various ELISA and Blot system to establish the
HIV infection. RESULTS: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. DISCUSSION
AND CONCLUSIONS: The increasing trends of HIV infections was noted in
the sex workers of Calcutta followed by professional blood donors and in
all categories of people having risk factors of HIV transmission in the
city of Calcutta having a population of 1.68 million. The details will
be presented in the scientific session of the conference.
